Life

Christakis-Zografos was the son of the entrepreneur Christakis Zografos from Qestorati in the prefecture of Gjirokastër (now Albania ). He studied law and political science in Paris and Munich . In 1905 he was elected to the Greek Parliament for Karditsa Prefecture and in August 1909 he served as Greece's Foreign Minister. He became a leading figure in the Greek national movement . After the Balkan Wars he was appointed Governor General of the Epirus region , which was conquered by the Greek army (from March 29 to December 31, 1913).

When the major European powers decided to assign Northern Epirus to Albania, an uprising of Greek Epiroten broke out in February 1914 against incorporation into Albanian territory. The resident Greeks formed a provisional government on February 28, 1914 with Zografos as president, which proclaimed the autonomy of the Northern Epirus region the following day in Gjirokastra . The Greeks under Zografos then began to persecute the Albanian Muslim population in their area of influence.

On May 17th, through the mediation of the great powers, a convention was signed in Corfu that met the main demands of the insurgents and guaranteed full autonomy within the Albanian borders. Korça and Gjirokastra were elevated to autonomous provinces. On October 27, after the First World War broke out and there was unrest in Albania, the Greek troops occupied northern Epirus for the second time.

Christakis-Zografos was elected to the Greek parliament in the following elections. In 1915 he held the post of foreign minister again for three months. He supported the entry of Greece on the side of the Entente in the First World War.
