Gerald Backhaus

Gerald Backhaus (* in Gotha ) is a German filmmaker , author and journalist .

Life

Gerald Backhaus has been producing documentaries and short films since 2004, directing and writing the scripts. His first defeat with Philipp Lux in the lead role was in the MDR and 3sat broadcast. The 3-minute strip Starthilfe , a production from 2010, was among the top ten in the 2013 Ver.di film competition. The actress Evelyn Opoczynski, who became famous in the GDR, plays the leading role in three of his short feature films, and she also gave her name to Evelyn and the Professionals (2008).

The art film Endless Kiss won an artistic competition and was published in 2012 in the Memorial for the Homosexuals Persecuted under National Socialism . Initially, it could be viewed there in the memorial on Berlin's Ebertstrasse for two and a half years until October 2014 and again 24 hours a day since January 2017. This film was also shown in an exhibition at the German Historical Museum Berlin from June to December 2015 and was shown in 2016 in Münster as part of this exhibition at the LWL Museum for Art and Culture .

His short film Ursus Berlinensis - Die Bären von Berlin (including with Nina Queer ) ran several times on the screen from 2011 to 2017 (including at the short film festival Interfilm Berlin ) - also in Melbourne, Australia - and was shown on television. Ursus Berlinensis - The Bears of Berlin at the satire film festival “Eulenspiegeleien” 2013 in Berlin-Adlershof, the 39th owl , received 1st prize in the “National” category, the audience prize and the BDFA Gold Prize . In 2013 Gerald Backhaus shot Ursus 2, a sequel to the bear film, which was released in 2014 at the ContraVision festival in Berlin . Gerald Backhaus completed his bear trilogy with the shooting of the short film Ursus 3 in 2016. This Ursus series was performed for the first time in a Berlin club in 2017.

Between 2013 and 2015 the one-hour documentary Bear Men was created , which Gerald Backhaus published in December 2015. An updated version of this film was created in summer 2019.

In 2016, the 70-minute documentary about an “Irrenhouse” night with Berlin's famous party organizer Nina Queer premiered at the Berlin Kino International .

In autumn 2018 Gerald Backhaus shot the short film We stay here! , which is about the threatening displacement of older people and a neighborhood café from the traditional neighborhood due to rising rents in Berlin. The actress Evelyn Opoczynski can be seen again in the lead role, Milan Peschel has a guest appearance.

The 90-minute documentary Thuringia, Your Language on Thuringian dialects and dialects was published in summer 2019 and then shown in cinemas in numerous locations in Thuringia and Berlin.

In 2019 and 2020 the documentary Among the Coffee Pickers in Brazil / Os apanhadores de café no Brasil - On the trail of a historical tragedy in Thuringia / Na trilha de uma tragédia histórica na Turíngia .
