Gerald Schneider (political scientist)

Gerald Schneider (born April 14, 1962 in Zurich , Switzerland ) is a Swiss political scientist and professor of international politics at the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz .

academic career

After training as a lawyer from 1981 to 1983 in Winterthur and Bern , Schneider studied political science , economics and general history at the University of Zurich between 1983 and 1988 . At the same time, he worked there between 1984 and 1991 as a research assistant , project worker and research assistant to Professors Daniel Frei and Ulrich Klöti . After stays at the University of Essex and the Århus Universitet , he received his doctorate in 1991 from the University of Zurich. This was followed by a scholarship for advanced researchers from the Swiss National Science Foundation until 1993 as a post-doctoral student at the University of Michigan .

From 1992 to 1994 Schneider was a lecturer at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies and from 1994 to 1997 program director and lecturer at the University of Bern . At the same time, he also took on representation at the University of Konstanz , where he has been full professor of international politics since 1997.

Schneider has researched at Harvard University, the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), the Peace Research Institute Oslo and the Università di Siena, among others. Between 2002 and 2004, Schneider was the elected Vice President of the International Studies Association, the world's largest professional organization in the field of international relations. Schneider is the managing editor of the scientific journal European Union Politics (EUP). For several years in a row, EUP has been one of the ten most important international political science journals in the world according to the ISI Web of Science ranking.

research

Schneider is the author or co-author of over one hundred scientific publications, including more than two dozen articles in internationally listed journals. His main research interests include the analysis of political decision-making processes, negotiation processes within the European Union, and the causes and consequences of military conflicts. Current research projects deal with the political economy of financial markets, the connection between social polarization and political violence, and the possible escalation of group decisions.
