Geraldine Branch , also known as Geraldine Burton Branch ( October 20, 1908 - July 22, 2016 ) was a gynecologist who practiced in New York City and Los Angeles .

Life

Geraldine Branch had a strong desire to study medicine at a time when it was uncommon for women. A scholarship made it possible to pursue this desire, she received her Bachelor in 1932 at Hunter College for Chemistry and Physics and in 1936 at New York Medical College. In 1962 she received a Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Los Angeles. She initially worked in New York in the gynecology and obstetrics sector in public health care , but moved to California early in her career, where she worked in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles until 2001 . It established some form of health insurance in this part of the city when it was uncommon in the US and played an important role in improving health care funding in this area of ​​the city. She was also instrumental in founding another school in Watts and later played an equally important role in founding the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science . She also helped found the Watts Health Center and the Watts Health Foundation. During and after the Watts social unrest in 1965 , she played the role of a community leader and sought redress.

Branch has authored several papers on various health conditions, including a "Study of Gonorrhea in Infants and Children". and "Neighborhood Aid Study to Combat Diphtheria Outbreak." The study of gonorrhea is of particular importance because, contrary to the prevailing opinion at the time, it identified sexual abuse in the family as the main cause of infection with gonorrhea in children.

Private

Geraldine Branch was the daughter of Joseph Burton and Agusta Freeman. She was married to Robert Henry and has two children, Elizabeth Doggette and Robert Henry III.

Awards

Geraldine Branch was one of the first to receive the Walter Gray Crump Fellowship. In 1992 Geraldine Branch received the Healing Hands Award from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2003 she was named "Special Honoree" of the Jazz at Drew Awards .

The Dr. The Geraldine Burton-Branch Award at the Charles S. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a merit scholarship named in her honor.
