The Roman Catholic subsidiary church St. Georg is a late Gothic hall church in the Georgenried district of Waakirchen in the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach . It belongs to the Gmund-Bad Wiessee parish in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

History and architecture

The original name Schimmelkapelle refers to pagan origins, probably a Wotan shrine on site, which has been reinterpreted as Christian. An archaeological investigation revealed that four church buildings can be identified at this point, including a church from around 1300, in which older components of a first church from around 1000 were reused.

Today's church is a tuff stone building from the years 1525–1528, which was built in place of the votive church donated by Georg von Waldeck (the third building) after a vow from 1444. A coat of arms keystone refers to the Tegernsee monastery as the client. The building was baroque from 1631 and renovated in 1958. Since another renovation in 2008, the church has been used for various occasions such as supplications, weddings and prayer.

The building is an unusually broadly proportioned hall church with three bays with a little drawn-in, three-sided closing choir and a roof turret with a high pointed helmet. It is accessed through a profiled pointed arched gate, which is profiled with a fillet and round bar crossed at the apex. The interior is characterized by the rich reticulated vault, which rests on consoles in the chancel and on pillars with corbels in the nave. The vault paintings from 1528 were uncovered in 1958 and show leaves and flowers with symbolic animals.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1631 shows standing figures of Saints George and Sebastian in the middle and the weather saints Johannes and Paul to the side. In Altar extract a late Gothic panel was re-used with the crucifixion that of late Gothic figures of St. Peter and Paul flanked. On the north wall of the choir there is a picture of St. Sorrow and a triptych-like panel with depictions of the Holy Family , Saints George and Florian , both from around 1600. Two side altars with rich cartilage show the figure of St. Rochus on the left, St. Anne himself , on the right, and the excerpts of God the Father and Christ as Savior. At the same time the pulpit with the statuettes of the evangelists was made.
