Gerard Veldkamp
Gerardus "Gerard" Mattheüs Johannes Veldkamp (born June 27, 1921 in Breda , province of North Brabant ; † September 15, 1990 in Paris ) was a Dutch politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), who was State Secretary and Minister for several years and a member of the for a short time Second Chamber of the States General was. Life
Local politician and State Secretary
After attending the Roman Catholic School Sint Sylvester and the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Lyceum secondary school in Breda, Veldkamp began his professional career in 1941 as a clerk at the Breda Labor Council and worked there until 1950. In addition, he studied economics at the Catholic School of Business in Tilburg between 1941 and 1948, and from 1947 to 1952 he was also a teacher of commercial management at the Catholic School for Community Service and the Catholic Technical Middle School in Breda.
Veldkamp began his political career in local politics when he represented the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) in the local council of Breda between 1948 and September 2, 1952 . During this time he was also chairman of the CIP faction in the local council from 1950 to 1952 . After his doctorate in economics at the Catholic Business School on November 10, 1949, which he completed cum laude with a dissertation on the subject of Individualistic karaktertrekken in de Nederlandse Sociale Arbeidsverzekering , he was between 1950 and 1952 scientific advisor in the Ministry of Social Affairs and secretary of the State Commission for Wealth accumulation.
On October 8, 1952, Veldkamp was appointed State Secretary for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Tourism in the Ministry of Economic Affairs in its second cabinet by Prime Minister Willem Drees and also held this position in its third cabinet , the second government of Louis Beel and the government of Jan de Quay until 17 July 1961, where he was last responsible for pricing since 1959 . In the meantime he was from March 20 to May 19, 1959 a member of the Second Chamber of the States General.
Minister, social commitment and university professor
By Prime Minister de Quay he was appointed Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health ( Minister van Sociale Zaken en Volksgezondheid ) on July 17, 1961 and also held this ministerial office in the subsequent government of Victor Marijnen , the cabinet of Jo Cals and the government of Jelle Zijlstra until April 5, 1967. During this time he was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General from July 2 to July 24, 1963. For his many years of service he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau on April 17, 1967 after leaving the cabinet .
Later he was involved from April 1, 1969 to November 9, 1982 as chairman of the Veldkamp Commission named after him, a state commission for the simplification and codification of social legislation, and between 1969 and 1987 as chairman of the Catholic Association for Maternity Protection. Furthermore, from July 1971 to January 1974 he was acting chairman of the psychiatric facility of the Willem Arntsz Foundation in Den Dolder .
On September 1, 1978 Veldkamp took over from the Foundation funded HPLC de Kruyff fund extraordinary professor for the teaching of social security at the State University of Leiden and taught there until September 1, 1986. Subsequently, he remained until his death as a consultant affiliated to the HPLC de Kruyff Fund Foundation.
