Gerd Riss

Gerd Riss (born March 17, 1965 ) is a former German motorcycle racer who was active on the dirt track, both on the short distance ( speedway ) and on the long distance (long track).

Career

In 1981 Gerd Riss started motorsport in Krumbach . During his active time, he started in the speedway for the MSC Diedenbergen and on the long track for the Herxheim motorsport association .

Eight times (1991, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009) he was able to achieve the world championship title on the long track . He was German champion on the long track eleven times (1988, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2009) and five times (1986, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1996) German champion in speedway . He was also team world champion on the long track with the German national team in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Gerd Riss was also an excellent speedway driver in the speedway world finals several times: 1987 in Amsterdam / NL, 1989 in Munich-Olympiastadion / D, 1991 in Gothenburg / S and 1993 in Pocking / D. In 1990 Riss was qualified as the winner of the continental finals in Norden / D (ie European finals) for the World Cup final in Bradford / GB, but was injured beforehand and could not take part there. In 1990, Riss was also European Speedway Champion. In the Speedway World Championship Grand Prix, introduced in 1995, Riss appeared as a wildcard pilot: GP Germany 1995 Abensberg 4th place, GP Germany 1996 in Pocking, GP Germany 1998 in Pocking and GP Czech Republic 1998 in Prague / CZ. For Germany, Riss took part in the Best Pairs World Cup in the 1980s and has been part of the German national speedway team since 1986, with which he took part in the Team World Cup. In the British speedway professional league, Gerd Riss had a longer contract with the Ipswich Witches in the 1980s.

In May 2011 he ended his career because of health problems following a serious fall at the 2010 French World Cup in Marmande.

Personal

The trained master carpenter is married and has two sons. He lives with his family in Seibranz, a suburb of Bad Wurzach . His two sons Mark Riss and Erik Riss have already followed in his athletic footsteps very successfully.
