Gerd Schank
Gerd Schank (* 1938 in Birkenfeld (Nahe) ; † November 12, 2007 ) was a German German and Romance scholar who became known for his contributions to foreign words and research on Friedrich Nietzsche .
Live and act
Schank studied German, Romance languages and philosophy at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . He received his doctorate in German studies in 1971 with the dissertation Etymology and Word Play in Johann Fischart's 'Geschichtsklitterung' , a contribution to the understanding of language in the 16th century. From 1971 to 1977 he was a research assistant at the Institute for the German Language at Freiburg University, where he also completed his habilitation. From 1977 Schank was a lecturer at the Institute for German Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen , where he also belonged to the Nietzsche Werkgroep.
In his studies on Nietzsche's Ecce homo , he used combined philosophical and semantic analysis methods to show problems in the relationship between the Apollonian-Dionysian and Christianity in the late Nietzsche. He relativized the usual conception of an opposing relationship between Dionysus and Christianity by assuming that one can speak more of a Dionysian agon.
