Gerd Schmitt

Gerd Schmitt (born December 13, 1949 in Worms ) is a German lawyer and was Director of the Federal Council from October 1, 2010 until he retired on April 1, 2015 . He was appointed State Secretary with effect from February 1, 2013 .

Life

After studying law in Heidelberg, Schmitt initially worked at the Biberach an der Riss district office from 1978 to 1980 . In 1980 he moved to the Ministry of the Interior in Baden-Württemberg , where he ended up as head of the press office and press spokesman for Interior Minister Heinz Eyrich . Then in June 1984 he went to represent the state of Baden-Württemberg at the federal level . There he was initially head of the central office and the ministerial office, from January 1992 then head of the department for federal affairs, Federal Council and press.

With effect from June 1, 2002 Gerd Schmitt was appointed Deputy Director of the Federal Council. Since October 1, 2010, he has been in charge of this supreme federal authority as the successor to Federal Council Director Dirk Brouër, who has retired for reasons of age .

Gerd Schmitt is married and has three children.
