Life

Gerd Thielemann was born as the only child of Hugo Thielemann and Johanna Thielemann (née Lange) in Leipzig. From 1942 to 1944 he completed an apprenticeship as a type lithographer . Between 1946 and 1951 he studied painting and graphics at the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig with Elisabeth Voigt, Walter Arnold and Kurt Maßloff. From 1952 to 1957 he studied at the Rephin Institute of the Academy of Arts of the USSR in Leningrad with AF Pachomow.

Then Thielemann was a lecturer and head of the evening academy in Leipzig. In 1997 he accompanied an ethnographic expedition on the trail of a former August the Strong's expedition to Tunisia. In the 50s and 60s he worked as a graphic artist with etchings , wood and linocuts and the design of books. In the mid-1970s he began to work more intensively in pastel painting . For a long time he made suitable pastel pencils himself. The pictures, mostly landscapes and cityscapes, are always created in nature and not in the studio.
