Gerhard Uhlhorn Church

The Gerhard-Uhlhorn Church is a former Evangelical Lutheran church in the Hanover district of Linden-Nord .

Church building

The church, named after Gerhard Uhlhorn and designed by the architect Reinhard Riemerschmid , was completed in 1963. Until then, the congregation, established in 1955, celebrated its services in a converted boathouse . The Gerhard-Uhlhorn-Kirche is a typical building from the 1960s with openwork structural concrete walls and a steep, open hipped roof with copper covering. The free-standing bell tower is kept slim and is popularly known as “God's microphone” because of its distinctive shape. The four crosses united to form the crown symbolize an ear of corn . Idyllically located in the green on the banks of the Leine , the church is regarded as an urban monument. The interior of the church is clearly structured and does not have any supports; the sacred space opens up in full size.

In 1999 colored windows by Berlin glass painter Ingrid Schuhknecht were installed, illustrating the second to sixth days of creation .

Since 2009 the Gerhard-Uhlhorn parish has merged with the parish of the Bethlehem Church and forms with it the Evangelical-Lutheran parish Linden-Nord.

Sale and reuse

During the restoration and renovation of the Bethlehem Church, the Gerhard Uhlhorn Church served the parish as a place of worship until Easter 2012 and was no longer used after the Bethlehem Church was put back into operation. On November 18, 2012, the day of national mourning, the church was divorced and was for sale until 2016. Two project developers acquired the building in March 2016 and have been converting it into a student residence since autumn 2018.

The move is planned for September 2019.
