Johann Gerhard Wilhelm Uhlhorn (born February 17, 1826 in Osnabrück , † December 15, 1901 in Hanover ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian , Abbot of Loccum and senior consistorial councilor .

Life

While studying Protestant theology in Göttingen , Uhlhorn joined Friedrich Lücke and from 1851 was editor of his magazine . In 1852 Uhlhorn completed his habilitation in church history and in 1855 became auxiliary preacher at the court and palace in Hanover. King George V showed great interest in Uhlhorn and promoted his career significantly. In 1857 he became the second court and palace preacher and voice assessor in the consistory . In 1860 Uhlhorn became the first head of the Henriettenstift . In the same year the king appointed him consistorial councilor and in 1861 first court and palace preacher. He prepared Crown Prince Ernst August 1861/62 for confirmation and advocated the introduction of the anti-Enlightenment catechism by royal decree, which triggered the Hanover catechism dispute. In 1866 Uhlhorn, who had been senior consistorial councilor since 1864, was appointed to the newly formed state consistory. From 1878 until his death Uhlhorn was abbot of the Loccum monastery , whose seminary he had a major influence on through his work.

Uhlhorn was chairman of the Historical Association for Lower Saxony from 1884 to 1901 and co-founder of the Society for Lower Saxony Church History in 1895 , which he also chaired until 1901.

His son is the theologian Friedrich Uhlhorn .

His grave is in the monastery cemetery in Loccum .
