Gerhard Bosinski (prehistorian)

Gerhard Bosinski (born June 1, 1937 in Schwerin ) is a German prehistorian .

Live and act

Gerhard Bosinski is the son of the theologian Gerhard Bosinski . From 1957 to 1963 he studied prehistory, ethnology and anthropology at the universities of Berlin , Mainz and Cologne . In Cologne he was in 1963 with the work The mittelpaläolithischen finds in western Central Europe Dr. phil. PhD . In 1963 he became a research assistant at the Institute of Prehistory and Early History of the University of Cologne, where he joined in 1972 with the work studies stone working in the Middle Palaeolithic habilitated and in 1980 professor was appointed. As a visiting professor, he taught at the universities of Berlin, Bordeaux , Göttingen and the Saarland University in Saarbrücken. In 2003 he retired .

From 1985 he was head of the Paleolithic Research Department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum and from 1988 to 2003 head of the Museum for the Archeology of the Ice Age in Monrepos Castle . He led the excavations in Gönnersdorf and took part in excavations in France, Georgia and Russia. In 1992 and 2003 he was awarded the Rudolf Virchow Lecture . From 1972 to 1974 he was deputy chairman of the German Society for Prehistory and Early History .

Gerhard Bosinski was married to Hannelore Bosinski (born November 10, 1938, † December 5, 2007), who jointly ran the Monrepos Castle Museum with him. He lives in the south of France near Montauban .
