Gerhard Braun (musician)

Gerhard Braun (born February 27, 1932 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ; † February 14,  2016  in  Stuttgart ) was a German flautist and university teacher .

Live and act

Gerhard Braun majored in flute at the Stuttgart University of Music . He received composition lessons from Konrad Lechner in Darmstadt and was also the director of several chamber music ensembles. As a flautist, Braun became known in the 1960s and 1970s, in particular through a series of world premieres of avant-garde flute music. Braun played a leading role in expanding the technical possibilities of various flutes. International concerts, radio and television recordings followed. In 1971 Braun was offered a professorship for transverse flute and recorder at the Karlsruhe University of Music . His retirement as professor took place in 1995. Braun then lived in Stuttgart.

Braun was a founding member and president of ERTA eV (European Recorder Teachers Association) until 1997.

Braun was also co-editor of the wind magazine Tibia . He has published numerous works and academic articles on questions of interpretation (especially modern flute music). At the same time he emerged as an author and editor of school works for flute (flute and recorder). Braun also became known as the editor of several series of old and new flute music.
