Gerhard Gutruf (born March 17, 1944 in Nikitsch , Burgenland) is an Austrian painter, graphic artist and art theorist.

Life

Gutruf studied painting, stage design and art education from 1962 to 1970 under Professors Sergius Pauser and Lois Egg at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . 1966 diploma for painting and graduation award from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. 1970/71 Rome scholarship. From 1975 to 1979 he headed the “Drawing and Theory” department at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg, and from 1976 to 1982 he taught at the International Summer Academy in Bruneck, South Tyrol. In 1982 he founded the Weinviertel cultural summer in Ravelsbach, Lower Austria.

Exhibitions

In 1974 Gutruf exhibited in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1976 he presented his picture Hommage à Vermeer - a variation of the studio picture Die Malkunst by Johannes Vermeer , on which he had painted for three years - in the Galerie Würthle in Vienna. As early as 1979, the Austrian Belvedere Gallery in Vienna dedicated a personal exhibition to him .

One of his numerous later study trips took Gutruf to Mexico in 1990. On the occasion of a visit to his studio, the then 90-year-old painter Rufino Tamayo suggested an exhibition in Mexico City , which was realized in 1993 in the Museo Nacional de la Estampa .

After further solo exhibitions a. a. in Guadalajara, 1987 Cairo, 1997 Addis Ababa, Ljubljana, Bratislava, Ascona, Pretoria, in the Museu da Electriciade in Lisbon, in Coimbra and Viseu Gutruf was invited by the doyen of Chinese painting Liu Xun , in 2000 in the International Yi Yuan Museum in Beijing exhibit.

In 2005 his exhibition Ojo a Madrid was shown in the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporaneo in the Spanish capital. Gutruf then exhibited in the Yeniköy Palace in Istanbul, twice he presented works in the Wagner Gallery in Wallisellen near Zurich, in 2007 the Camera Gallery in Kiev showed his works, and in 2008 there was a large staff with over 130 works in the Ningbo Museum of Art , one of the largest new art museums in China. In 2009 Gutruf exhibited in the Academisch Genootschap Eindhoven and in Louk's Galerie, Enschede in the Netherlands.

From January to April 2010, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien presented an exhibition based on Vermeer's masterpiece De Schilderkunst (The Art of Painting), in which different variations of this picture - u. a. by Peter Greenaway, Maria Lassnig and Gutruf - were shown. In May 2010 the Viennese artist designed the first exhibition by a living artist for the Vermeer Centrum Delft .

Four of his watercolors were on view in 2010 at the Shanghai International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition, to which over 2000 painters from 19 countries submitted their watercolors. The Viennese artist was the only Austrian to be selected by a jury - his sheets were presented with 240 watercolors by other artists in the Chinese city.

Work and publications

In addition to his artistic work, Gutruf deals with art-theoretical and philosophical problems. He gave lectures at universities to art historians, he writes reviews of various exhibitions and artists, and deals with phenomena of perspective and composition, especially in Vermeer's work. Gutruf's scientific study Reconstructing Vermeer's Perspective in “The Art of Painting” , which he wrote together with Hellmuth Stachel from the Institute for Geometry at the Vienna University of Technology, was presented at the beginning of August 2010 at the 14th International Conference on Geometry and Graphics in Kyoto, Japan . An extended text was published under the title The Hidden Geometry in Vermeer's The Art of Painting in the Journal for Geometry and Graphics of the TU Wien.

Awards

In 1975 Gutruf received the Prize of the Vienna Art Fund, in 1980 the Theodor Körner Prize , in 1982 a work grant from the City of Vienna, and in 1999 the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art . 2002 Schaechter Scholarship for Advanced Studies, New York, 2005 the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Lower Austria .

On June 1, 2007 Gutruf was awarded the professional title of Professor .
