life and work

Gerhard Hofmann is best known as a color eraser. His graphic works include graphic series on musical and literary subjects such as Mozart's “ Magic Flute ” (1991 and 2000), Shakespeare's “ Midsummer Night's Dream ” (1992), the musical “ Cats ” (1993) or “ Alice in Wonderland ” by [Lewis Carroll]. Since 1995 a large number of cityscapes of European and German cities have been created.

The specialty of the etching and printing technique used by Hofmann is that, as a rule, three differentiated etched aquatint plates are laid out and printed one on top of the other in the primary colors of yellow, red and blue, so that the result is the greatest possible variety and color mixture.

Hofmann taught in 1982 and 1984, and from 1989 to 1999 as assistant to the etching class at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg . During this time he assisted Rudolf Hradil, Uwe Bremer , Markus Vallazza , Yoshi Takahashi , Jan Voss, Kunito Nagaoka, Dora Maurer and Adriena Simotová.

Gerhard Hofmann received, among other things, the Rhineland-Palatinate Prize for Graphics in 1984 and the Palatinate Prize for Painting in 1986 . Hofmann also works as a sculptor , designer and book illustrator. In 1995 and 1996 a series of glass sculptures was created in collaboration with Berengo Fine Arts in Venice . Since 1996 Gerhard Hofmann has designed various decors with city views for Rosenthal AG . He lives and works in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse .
