Gerhard Kromschröder

Gerhard Kromschröder (* 1941 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German journalist and photographer . Together with Günter Wallraff , he developed the method of undercover research . Kromschröder mingled with neo-Nazis undetected, lived for a time as a Turkish worker or carried out camouflaged test campaigns to check PR allegations for their accuracy.

biography

After studying German , sociology and art history , he worked from 1963 to 1967 as a local editor in Lingen and for the Ems newspaper in Papenburg . From mid-1967 he worked for the political-satirical magazine Pardon in Frankfurt am Main, most recently as art director and deputy editor-in-chief .

In 1979 he became editor and reporter for Stern in Hamburg, where he established his reputation as an investigative journalist. In Stern 's features appear on neo-Nazis , toxic waste scandals or Flick funding scandal . In 1983 Kromschröder published his experience report as a Turkish worker under the title When I was a Turk , three years before Günter Wallraff's Ganz unten . In the same year he reported from inside the Borussen Front , an extremist group of neo-Nazis in the football fan milieu. In 1985 he gained access to the inner circle of old German Nazis around Otto Ernst Remer .

From 1989, Kromschröder was the Middle East correspondent for Stern , based in Cairo; During this time during the first Iraq war he worked as the only German journalist and photo reporter in bombed Baghdad . His book, Pictures from Baghdad - My Diary , was published for the second Iraq war , in which he described his experiences as a war reporter .

Since 1993 he has worked in media consulting for companies and publishers. His lectures in the summer semester 2005 at the University of Vienna as part of the Theodor Herzl lectureship for the poetics of journalism appeared under the title Ach, der Journalismus .

In 2017, Kromschröder became together with Gerhard Henschel for their book Landvergabe. Awarded the Ben Witter Prize by Arno Schmidt zu Walter Kempowski on the Lüneburg Heath .
