Gerhard Lang (2008)

Gerhard Lang (* 21st October 1924 in Ravensburg , † 19th June 2016 in Biberach ) was a German botanist with the research priorities Vegetation Science , Geobotany and Quaternary vegetation history.

Live and act

During his school days in Ravensburg, Lang was one of Karl Bertsch's students . From 1946 he studied botany and zoology at the University of Freiburg with the minor subjects chemistry and physics. After changing to the University of Göttingen in 1952, he studied with Franz Firbas , where he met with a pollen analysis work for late glacial vegetation history and Flore history in southwest Germany doctorate .

His professional career led Lang in 1952 as curator and head of the botanical department at the then State Collections for Natural History (today's State Museum for Natural History ) in Karlsruhe , where he was chief curator and deputy museum director until 1975 .

1962 was long a lectureship Geobotany at the University of Karlsruhe , where he in 1966 with a thesis on the riparian vegetation of the western Lake Constance habilitated . In 1972 he was appointed adjunct professor .

In 1975 Lang was appointed full professor and director of the Systematic-Geobotanical Institute of the University of Bern (successor to Max Welten ). After his retirement in 1989, Lang moved back to his Upper Swabian homeland in Biberach.

Research trips and study visits

1956 French Massif Central, 1959 England, Botany School Cambridge, 1965 Australia (Australian Alps) National University of Canberra, 1971 Siberia, 1975 Armenia, 1978 Western Canada and Western USA, 1981 Tropical and Central Australia, 1983 Argentina.

Research activity

During his time in Karlsruhe, the focus of his research was in the field of vegetation - plant-sociological mapping of measuring table sheets on a scale of 1: 25,000 in the Upper Rhine Plain, the Black Forest and the Lake Constance area as well as the pollen analysis and vegetation-historical processing of moors and lakes in southwest Germany. During his time in Bern, research was focused on the Alpine region, in particular on the investigation and research of the dynamic vegetation processes of the past and climate change, as well as the development of multiproxy paleoecological research approaches. He introduced new methods and technologies, such as quantitative macro residue analysis and subaquatic platform drilling, which enabled new insights (Lang 1975, 1985). As a result, his research expanded from vegetation ecology and vegetation history to modern multiproxy paleoecology. After his retirement, Gerhard Lang wrote the first textbook on the Quaternary vegetation history of Europe in 1994.
