Gerhard Lewin

Gerhard Lewin (born March 8, 1917 ; † January 2017 in Neubrandenburg ) was a German sports scientist , university professor , swimming sports official and author of swimming textbooks.

Life

Lewin worked from 1953 at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig as head of the institute for swimming, where he completed his doctoral thesis in 1963 on the subject of "Swimming training for preschool children: Investigations into the development of water safety and swimming ability in five and six-year-old preschoolers ”. In 1967 Lewin's textbook “Swimming with Little People” came out, and in the following years there were further editions of the work. Also in the 1960s he was the author or co-author of the books “Basic training in swimming and popular diving” and “Swimming: basic training, basic training; a textbook for trainers, trainers and sports teachers ”. Lewin headed the DhfK swimming institute until 1968. According to Jürgen Dietze , the institute developed under Lewin's leadership "into a nationally and internationally recognized institution in research and teaching." From 1974 to 1976 he stayed in Cuba on behalf of the swimming association of the GDR, where he was active in training as well as in the top level as a trainer . He performed a similar task in Mexico in the 1970s .

In the 1970s and 1980s, Lewin also published books and articles on the subject of swimming, including further editions of the comprehensive work "Swimming", which dealt with competitive swimming, sport swimming, diving, water polo, artificial swimming and recreational swimming. In 1983 he presented a "new version of the swimming badge of the German Swimming Association of the GDR". In 1994 Lewin published the book “Swimming is child's play: a guide for parents, schools and clubs”, which was a further development of his previous works on basic training.

From 1990 to 2009 Lewin was a member of the board of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Swimming Association and was its honorary member. In 1997 he was awarded the letter of honor, the highest DSV award, from the German Swimming Association (DSV).

Lewin's wife Käthe, who died in 2013, was also a sports scientist and author of several books on the subject of children's gymnastics and physical education.
