Life

Origin and family

Gerhard Morrien came from the Westphalian noble family Morrien , which was one of the leading families in the knightly class in the Middle Ages and early modern times and held the office of Hereditary Marshal in the Duchy of Münster from 1350 to 1691 . He was born the son of Hereditary Marshal Gerhard Morrien (builder of Nordkirchen Castle ) and his wife Ida von Bevern . She was an heir and so Gerhard came into the possession of Westbevern . In addition to Gerhard, the marriage also gave birth to their son Lubbert , who was canon in Munster in 1478 and was dean in Werne.

Act

Gerhard became hereditary marshal of Münster as early as 1426. His task consisted of chairing the state parliament . In disputes between the bishop and his vassals, he was an arbiter in feudal matters. After a bishop's election, he received the state privileges of the newly elected and was praeses of the knighthood in the diocese and kept the keys to the knighthood archive. During the Munster collegiate feud after the Battle of Valar on July 18, 1454, he was knighted on the battlefield. He supported Bishop Walram von Moers in this dispute . This contributed significantly to the further rise of the family. On March 27, 1427 he married Margarethe von Borghorst zu Horstmar. She was an heir daughter. So Morrien came into the possession of the parishes of Horstmar, Schöppingen, Eggerode, Epe, Laer, Leer, Neuenkirchen and Borghorst. The marriage, which lasted over 50 years, resulted in nine children, including Dietrich (heir and canon), Bernhard, Sander and Richmod (* 1443, ∞ Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering). On August 6, 1444, Gerhard was appointed Drosten and in 1489 an official of the Werne Office. In 1476 the couple made a joint will and appointed their eldest son Dietrich as heir of the Free County of Wesenfort and the house of Nordkirchen. After Margaret's death in 1481, Gerhard consoled himself with the maid Elisabeth thor Hove. The son Gerhard (later vicar general) comes from this connection. In 1484 Gerhard donated the Stephans-Vicarie in Nordkirchen.
