Gerhard Oehmigen (* 1934 ) is a German sports historian and university professor .

Life

Oehmigen completed his doctoral thesis in 1969 at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig (title: “The Formation of the Imperialist Concept of Europe in the West German Sports Movement”). He belonged to the first generation of graduates so that no longer fachfremd had a doctorate. As a result, he continued to deal scientifically with sports policy in West Germany and published, among other things, in 1968 the essay “On the problems of West German competitive sports under the conditions of the state monopoly system of rule”. At the beginning of the 1970s he was involved in research work on the subjects of "Essential development trends in competitive sport under the conditions of the state monopoly system of rule in the FRG" and "Nationalist tendencies in politics and ideology of sport in the West German Federal Republic in preparation for the 1972 Olympic Games". After the 1972 Summer Olympics , he and Hans Schuster presented an assessment of the games from a sports-political point of view for the German Democratic Republic , in which the authors described the games as a "significant success for socialism" and the host Federal Republic of Germany, among other things, described them as "communist Incitement ”and attempts to“ play off the athletes of the socialist countries against each other ”were accused. Furthermore, he dealt with "theoretical basic positions on the process of democratization of international sport".

In 1980 he completed his PhD B at the DHfK , the title of the publication was "On the analysis of the strategy and tactics of imperialism in the class struggle in competitive sport: attempting a theoretical-methodological foundation for research on contemporary sport politics". From 1981 to 1990 he then held a professorship for the history of sport at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport (FKS) in Leipzig .

At the beginning of the 1980s he dealt among other things with the “role of international sports relations for understanding between peoples” as well as a “threat to international sports relations through the commercialization of imperialist competitive sport”.

In his sport- political analysis of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , in which GDR athletes did not take part, which he presented again with Schuster , the event was classified as an attempt “to fool the world into a perfectly organized Olympic Games”. The games were "fully integrated into the US global strategy," said Oehmigen and Schuster. Another topic of his research in the 1980s was the peace responsibility of the Olympic movement. Oehmigen was Vice President of the International Committee on Sports History at the CIEPSS .

After the end of the GDR, Oehmigen published, among other things, articles in the GDR-related magazine "Contributions to the history of sports" and was one of the authors of the book "History of GDR Sports" published in 2002. Oehmingen was also involved in the Saxon Gymnastics Association and, as a senior apprentice and responsible for maintaining tradition, was awarded the Joker honorary status by the Free State of Saxony in 2011 .
