Gerhard Rein (journalist)

Gerhard Rein (born October 25, 1936 in Kulm , West Prussia ) is a German journalist.

Life

After fleeing West Prussia, Gerhard Rein lived with his mother and siblings in Achim from 1945 , where he also graduated from school. After a commercial apprenticeship in Bremen, he was an intern at the Weser-Kurier and worked as a journalist for the Achimer Kreisblatt , the Ostbremer Rundschau and the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hanover . In 1961 he began working as an editor in the Church and Society department of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR). He later took over the management of this department. Some of the series of programs he edited (discussions, interviews, presentations) were later published in book form. From 1982 to 1990 he was a correspondent for the SDR in the GDR. The focus of his reporting was the culture and the role of the church in the GDR. He had many contacts with members of the peace, environmental and opposition movement that was forming in the vicinity of the Evangelical Church and reported with “distance to the powerful, to the nomenklatura, but not to those who the system had marginalized and who were silent wanted to do ". From 1992 to the end of August 1997 he reported as a radio correspondent for ARD from southern Africa (Studio Johannesburg ). He was then radio correspondent for the SDR until 2001 and from October 1998 for the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) in Berlin.

In 2006 he learned that his Jewish father died in March 1945 in the Ebensee concentration camp in Upper Austria under unexplained circumstances. Gerhard Rein is a member of the Pankower Peace Circle . He lives with his wife in Berlin-Charlottenburg .
