Gerhard Rohde

Gerhard Rohde (born September 9, 1931 in Kiel ; † February 25, 2015 in Bad Schwalbach ) was a German music critic .

life and work

Rohde first studied law at Kiel University and attended lectures by the musicologist Friedrich Blume .

After graduating, he wrote as a freelance critic for music and theater for regional newspapers and the magazine Musikalische Jugend . From 1962 he was a North German theater reporter for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a music editor for the Hannoversche Rundschau and then from 1967 to 1974 he moved to Frankfurt am Main as an editor for the “Zeitung für Frankfurt”, the local section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . The FAZ remained with Rohde as a freelance author - also with cultural and political contributions - until the end of his life.

From 1968 to 2007 Rohde was editor-in-chief of the new musikzeitung (nmz), which emerged from the musical youth , and then joined the editorial board.

Rohde reported on all major European music events. He was particularly interested in new music .

On February 20, 2015, Rohde was awarded the Happy New Ears Prize for Journalism from the Hans and Gertrud Zender Foundation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for his contributions to new music . For health reasons he was unable to accept the award personally.
