Gerhard Schäfer (journalist)

Gerhard Schäfer (born June 27, 1922 in Hanau ; † April 13, 2015 in Bochum ) was a German radio journalist .

Life

Gerhard Schäfer grew up as the son of a lawyer and notary in Kassel and passed his Abitur in 1939 at the humanistic grammar school there. At the beginning of the Second World War he came to Magdeburg as a flagjunker for Artillery Regiment 12 and was briefly captured by the British at the end of the war. After his release, Schäfer worked for a time in a fittings factory before he trained as a teacher at the pedagogical seminar in Bremen in 1946 and started teaching in Bremen that same year. At the same time, he worked for the Journalistic Study Society and as a freelancer for various daily newspapers.

In 1947 Gerhard Schäfer came to Radio Bremen , where he was entrusted with setting up a school radio program before he was appointed head of school radio the following year. Further stations in the station were from 1963 the head of the main education department, and he was also the manager's agent for the training of young people in radio programs. In 1971 he became program director of the radio, after having held this post for two years as a deputy, in 1972 he was appointed to the post of deputy director. In 1982 Schäfer retired for health reasons.

Gerhard Schäfer, who had been a member of the SPD since 1950 , was Chairman of the State Broadcasting Committee for 17 years after the establishment of the Bremen State Media Authority in 1989.
