The talaiotic settlement of Es Antigors ( Mallorcan Poblat talaiòtic es Antigors ) is a prehistoric site on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the municipality of Ses Salines in the region (comarca) Migjorn , near the south coast of the island. The settlement from the time of the Talaiot culture (also Talayot culture) was excavated in the 1920s by Josep Colominas i Roca (also José Colominas Roca) from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans , but the excavation was not documented.
location
Es Antigors , also called Els Antigors in standard Catalan or Los Antigors in Castilian , is located about 700 meters south of the town limits of Ses Salines, the main town of the municipality. The street Carrer es Torrent leads to the Talaiotic settlement, which begins at the square in front of the town's cemetery and ends in a dead end. Next to the archaeological site is the Pou Jou estate , both northeast of the road. The coast of the Mediterranean Sea is about 4.2 kilometers away from Es Antigors to the southwest at Es Carbó , and about 5.3 kilometers southeast at Cala Figuereta .
description
At the time of the excavation in the 1920s, there were three talaiots , prehistoric towers , within the surrounding wall of the Talaiotic settlement or on its edge . One of these towers was dismantled during the excavations.
The best-preserved talaiot, given the name "Joana", stands on the outer south-western edge of the settlement. It is about four meters high and has a portal with a lintel . Inside a bronze lance tip and in a layer of ash some charred human remains, like after a ritual cremation, were found. Of the former central column of the talaiot, only the lowest stone remains in its place.
The surrounding wall of the Talaiotic settlement adjoining the Talaiot "Joana" was built with limestone on an oval floor plan. Only a few parts of the wall are left today, as it has been used as a quarry since the time of the excavation and was partly built over with smaller stones to form dry stone walls . Other small stones that were once part of the settlement were piled up on the site of the excavation site as piles of stones (clapers) .
Important parts of the excavation were later filled in again, so that today it is no longer possible to see the architectural details. In the north-eastern area of the site, three layers of limestone blocks of a talaiot can be seen, which are completely filled with earth on the inside. In the west was the horseshoe-shaped main sanctuary of the settlement with four pillared bases or altars made of limestone, of which only a few remains of the wall remain. Here the excavators found pottery in urns made of Marès sandstone. The sanctuary is one of the areas covered with earth again after the excavation.
The Talaiotic settlement of Es Antigors has been registered as an archaeological monument (Monument arqueològic) since 1966 under the number RI-51-0002683 . The site is freely accessible to visitors.
