Gerhard Schmidt-Kaler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Schmidt-Kaler (born February 25, 1920 in Dombühl ; † January 1, 2008 in Erlangen ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

life and work

Schmidt-Kaler grew up in Franconia and studied at the Art Academy in Nuremberg from 1937 until the start of the war. During World War II he was a soldier in Russia and later in France. After the war he was able to continue and complete his studies at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts . Since 1949 he worked as a freelance graphic artist and lived mainly in Möhrendorf near Erlangen. He later founded his own publishing house for large-format teaching materials.

Already in his first drawings the people and the places of his Franconian homeland were in the foreground as motifs. Watercolors, drawings and etchings show - often in small format - landscapes, places, palaces and castles of his homeland. There were also sculptural works, often with Christian motifs. Representations of the apostles and biblical scenes, partly also as relief, are part of his work. His silhouettes are also particularly important to his late work. The places in the vicinity are also very often shown here. In addition, various silhouette alphabets with factual and animal representations were created, often in a cheerful, humorous, decorative manner. His works were always created through very precise observation and intensive drawing work with great interest in the subject. Since 1951, the confirmation certificates of the confirmands of the Scherneck parish have been illustrated with a reproduced drawing by Schmidt-Kaler. In 1996 his exhibition "Franconian: People, Villages, Landscapes" was shown by the Schweinfurt Municipal Collections in the Gunnar-Wester-Haus in Schweinfurt.

In the exhibition “Erlanger Stadtansichten” in the Erlangen City Museum and the accompanying catalog, he was noted as having passed away in 1998, which prompted him in February 2004 to organize an event to celebrate his “Vacation from the Immortals”.

Gerhard Schmidt-Kaler's estate is kept in the Museum Schweinfurt and in the Erlangen City Archives.
