Scherneck is a district of the Upper Franconian community of Untersiemau in the Coburg district .

location

Scherneck is located about seven kilometers south of Coburg on a rocky slope on the Itz . The Carl-Mühle and the Weidenmühle operate hydropower plants on the Itz. The district road CO 25, which leads from Untersiemau to Seßlach , runs through the village .

history

Scherneck was first mentioned in 1225 as "Scherneke". The operation of a mill on the Itz is documented for the year 1253.

In 1525, in the Peasants 'War , and in 1632, in the Thirty Years' War , Scherneck was destroyed by fires.

A manor existed no later than the middle of the 14th century. Owners in the 16th century were the lords of Burghausen. The rule of the village changed frequently in the following centuries. A house and noble residence with a moat was mentioned in 1642. The manor house of the manor was dilapidated in the 18th century. The Coburgisch-Saalfeld landscape director Moritz Carl Freiherr von Imhoff had a new building built around 1775, a simple sandstone block structure with a mansard roof . A palace park was part of it, designed as a terrace garden. The von Lichtenberg family dissolved the estate with the castle in 1859/60 and sold it in parts.

In 1837 the place had 329 inhabitants. In a referendum on November 30, 1919, six citizens of Scherneck voted for the Free State of Coburg to join the Thuringian state and 168 against. From July 1, 1920, Scherneck also belonged to the Free State of Bavaria . In 1925, the 309.12 hectare village had 410 inhabitants, 403 of whom belonged to the Protestant church, and 76 residential buildings.

In 1963 Ziegelsdorf was incorporated. On May 1, 1978 Scherneck was incorporated as a district in the municipality of Untersiemau. In 1987 the place had 639 inhabitants and 159 buildings with living space.

economy

Three furniture factories determined the economic life of the place in the second half of the 20th century. The Carl mill, a still active large mill on the Itz, produces flour.

church

The oldest part of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church is the late Gothic church tower, the core of which dates from the 15th century. The choir tower church in its current form was rebuilt from 1705 to 1707. The Moses pulpit, which is dated around 1650, and the baptismal font from 1634 come from the previous church.
