Gerhard Schumann (born July 29, 1914 in Görlitz ; † August 10, 1976 ) was a German composer of serious music .

life and work

Gerhard Schumann received his first musical training in Görlitz from his father Oswald Schumann on the violin, later from Hans Norden (piano) and Walter Schartner (composition, conducting). In 1937 Gerhard Schumann received a scholarship at the Berlin Conservatory, where he completed his studies under Walther Gmeindl , Clemens Schmalstich and Hermann Roth .

Gerhard Schumann got his first job in 1940 as conductor of the Poznan Symphony Orchestra . In the following years Gerhard Schumann worked as Kapellmeister at the city theaters of Spremberg , Bautzen , Wurzen and Burgstädt . From 1950 Gerhard Schumann worked as a composer and conductor in Berlin, where he directed the Tonale Chamber Orchestra from 1954 .

The compositional oeuvre of Gerhard Schumann comprises well over 200 works from the fields of chamber and orchestral music, as well as choral and lied works. Gerhard Schumann's estate is kept in the Berlin State Library and the Munich City Music Library.

Gerhard Schumann died in 1976 at the age of 62. His grave is in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg .
