Gerhard Stelz

Gerhard Stelz (born February 8, 1952 in Bad Nauheim ) is a retired major general in the Bundeswehr . In his last employment, he was in command of Defense Area II from December 12, 2008 to June 30, 2013 .

Immediately after obtaining the general university entrance qualification in Friedberg (Hesse) , Stelz joined the Bundeswehr in 1970 and began his service with the 53rd Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Fritzlar . After attending Army Officer's School I in Hanover from 1972 to 1973 , he returned to this battalion in 1973, where he worked as platoon leader, S2 officer and company commander until 1982 .

From 1982 to 1984 Stelz took part in the 25th General Staff Course (LGAN) at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in order to then be employed as a G4 staff officer in the I. Corps in Münster. From 1986 he attended the US Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and completed his stay there in 1987. After serving as a G3 staff officer at the NATO headquarters in Heidelberg, he was in command of the 562 Panzer Grenadier Battalion from 1990 to 1991 and then served as a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense until 1995 . A further study stay in the USA at the US Army War College was followed by the employment as a military attaché in Washington DC.After his return to Germany he acted as head of department in the BMVg until he finally took over command of the Panzerlehrbrigade 9 in 2001 and during this employment for six months in 2002 led the German contingent SFOR . In 2004 Stelz became Deputy Commander of the Air Mobile Operations Division . In the summer of 2004 he was again on a six-month assignment abroad with SFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina , his assignment being that of the commander of the Multinational Task Force South-East (MNTF-SE) in Mostar in Herzegovina . After a further integrated assignment at the NATO headquarters in Brunssum , he was finally Deputy Commander of KFOR from 2007 to 2008 .

On December 12, 2008 he was appointed Commander in Defense Division II .
