Gerhard V. (Eppstein)

Gerhard V. von Eppstein (* unknown; † after 1294 ) was a nobleman of the younger line of the Eppstein family . The Eppsteiners, who succeeded in establishing one of the most important aristocratic rule in Hesse in the late Middle Ages and who were wealthy in Spessart, Taunus and Wetterau as early as 1200, were noble lords and in the 13th century had four archbishops and electors from Mainz .

Life

Gerhard V. von Eppstein was the son of Gottfried III. von Eppstein and his wife Mathilde and Mechthild von Isenburg-Wied.

He started out as a cleric. His work as Prior of St. Peter in Mainz between 1286 and 1290 is known. At the instigation of his uncle Gerhard II von Eppstein , who was Archbishop of Mainz at the time, he resigned from the clergy to establish political ties through a marriage of the Eppstein family. Then he married about December 1, 1294 Elisabeth (the middle) of Hesse (1276-1306), the daughter of Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse and his wife Mechtild von Kleve.
