Gottfried III. (Eppstein)

Gottfried III. von Eppstein, the Younger (* around 1222 or around 1227 ; † 1293 or after September 4, 1294 ) was a nobleman of the younger line of the House of Eppstein . The Eppsteiners, who succeeded in establishing one of the most important aristocratic rule in Hesse in the late Middle Ages and who were wealthy in Spessart, Taunus and Wetterau as early as 1200, were noble lords and in the 13th century had four archbishops and electors from Mainz .

Gottfried III. was the son of Gottfried II von Eppstein and his wife Elisabeth von Isenburg-Cleeberg .

Before 1253 he married Mechthild / Mathilde von Isenburg-Wied (*?; † around 1280), a daughter of Count Bruno II. Von Isenburg-Braunsberg . It is also known that after March 28, 1280, he had a morganatic connection with Sezele Fleming (*?, †?).

Life

According to Otto Renkhoff, Gottfried III. a powerful and prudent regiment. He took part in the peace efforts and tried to enforce his territorial claims against Adolf von Nassau , the future king. Around 1282/83 he had the Eppstein Fief Register drawn up, which is still used today as an important source for the history of the family and their property.
