Life

The pontificate of Siegfried's uncle Gerhard II von Eppstein as Archbishop of Mainz and Elector (1289 to 1305) had a considerable influence on the reign in Eppstein: Gerhard II moved his brother Gottfried III. and his nephew Siegfried significantly in the services of the archdiocese with one and joined the archbishop's policy with the family policy of house Eppstein .

Siegfried and his father Gottfried III. also benefited from the electoral capitulation of Elector Gerhard II von Eppstein with the Roman-German King Adolf von Nassau, who ruled from 1292 to 1298 . So Siegfried was appointed Burgmann in Friedberg, with which the Eppsteiner gained an important base in the Wetterau. The service for the archbishopric brought not only territorial and financial gains for the Eppsteiners, but also placed considerable financial demands on the family and resulted in Siegfried having to make extensive sales.

His uncle Gerhard II supported the election of Albrecht I von Habsburg as Roman-German king (1298 to 1308), but fell out quickly with him, with the result that Siegfried was involved in a warlike conflict on October 15, 1301 had to submit to the royal army at Flörsheim am Main and was only released again by paying a ransom.
