Gerhard Vontra (born August 12, 1920 in Altenburg ; † April 23, 2010 in Prerow ) was a German draftsman and caricaturist .

Life

Gerhard Vontra studied at the Art Academy in Leipzig and Munich . One of his teachers was the Norwegian draftsman for the satirical magazine Simplicissimus Olaf Gulbransson . As a soldier, he served in the infantry during World War II . Vontra began his career in the 1950s with the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel . On sea voyages with merchant ships, he reached India, Mexico, Cuba, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Japan, Morocco and Tanzania. He painted on the ships and countless street scenes of the countries he visited.

“I'm looking for the original. Everything seduces me to draw, and I fill my folders and boxes with drawings without commissioning. I don't know of any recipe how to create enthusiasm in existence, but I myself look forward to every day. "

His grave is in the churchyard of the Seemannskirche in his adopted home Prerow auf dem Darß, where he has lived and painted regularly in the summer months since 1950.

Works

Vontra illustrated more than 50 books and worked as a press illustrator for more than 20 newspapers. In the Berliner Zeitung of the 1960s and 1970s there was a series of characters With Heart and Muzzle by Gerhard Vontra, which was initially signed with the pseudonym " Paule Panke ". Vontra portrayed Bertolt Brecht , Helene Weigel , Thomas Mann , Günter Grass , Marcel Marceau and Erwin Geschonneck, among others . In addition to caricatures, portraits and press drawings, landscape images , especially from his adopted home, Darß , are among Vontra's most important works.
