Gerhard Weißgrab (born January 17, 1952 ) is President of the Austrian Buddhist Religious Society (ÖBR) and thus the highest representative of Buddhists in Austria .

Life

Gerhard Weissgrab was socialized as a Catholic as a child and adolescent. At the age of 27 he learned about Buddhism on a trip through Sri Lanka . The book Freedom and Happiness by the philosopher Volker Zotz provided an essential impetus for his turn to Buddhism . From 2003 to 2006 Weissgrab was the chairman of the Buddhist community in Austria. In 2006 Weissgrab was elected President of the ÖBR. He has held this position ever since.

Awards

  • On July 8, 2011, White Grave received the Jathyantara dharmaduta wansa pradeepa - the highest honor for a non- monk - from the supreme monastic order of Sri Lanka for his commitment to Buddhism in Europe . The award was presented in Colombo . The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister and other high-ranking figures in the country. In the run-up to the honor, Weissgrab had a half-hour meeting with the President of Sri Lanka, at which the end of the decades-long civil war was discussed.
  • In 2012 Weissgrab received the Great Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria for his many years of commitment to Buddhism and its positive effect on society
  • On February 23, 2016, White Grave was awarded the “World Buddhist Outstanding Leader Award 2016” in the International Conference Center of Pathum Thani in Thailand . This prize has been awarded since 2014 by the “World Alliance of Buddhist Leaders” and the youth organization of the World Fellowship of Buddhists to personalities who have earned their merit in the development of Buddhism. Weissgrab was selected from 136 nominations from 51 states for 2016.
