Gerhard Zech (* 28. May 1938 in Berlin ) is a former German professional boxer in the heavyweight division .

biography

Zech began his professional career in 1959 without having previously been an amateur. The 196 cm tall athlete boxed as a southpaw in the heavyweight division.

In 1963 he became national champion with a knockout victory against Albert Westphal from Hamburg . He defended the title three times before losing the championship again to Jürgen Blin , against whom he had previously boxed twice in a draw.

Twice (1965 and 1967) Gerhard Zech fought unsuccessfully against Karl Mildenberger for the European heavyweight championship.

His career had its first high point in 1960 with the victory over the top Italian boxer Giacomo Bozzano .

After 16 wins in a row, Zech was knocked out by the Jamaican club fighter Joe Bygraves in 1961 , while Bygraves had over 20 defeats on the account, but also had a knockout victory over Henry Cooper .

In 1965 he scored Bygraves in a revenge.

With a record of 27-1-1 he was defeated by Ernie Terrell in New York in Madison Square Garden in 1964 on points, in the same year he went KO against the American world-class boxer Zora Folley .

The biggest fight of his life was the fight against Sonny Liston , the former heavyweight world champion, whom he lost on July 1, 1966 in Stockholm by knockout in the 7th round.

After a defeat against the Argentine heavyweight champion and former South American champion Gregorio Peralta, who had made ends meet with the two-time heavyweight world champion George Foreman , Gerhard Zech announced his resignation in 1971.

Zech played the head nurse Sievers as an actor in the TV adaptation of Dürrenmatt's physicist . The television play was broadcast in 1964 with Therese Giehse , Gustav Knuth and Wolfgang Kieling . The DVD was published by the Film101 publishing house in Munich. He had other television appearances for example in 1970 in an episode of the entertainment show Haifischbar and in 1971 with Georg Thomalla and Walter Kohut in Tommi and the new apartment .
