Gerhard von Lengerken (born November 18, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German agricultural scientist, he was a university lecturer for animal breeding and product science at the University of Halle .

Live and act

Gerhard von Lengerken was born with his twin brother Jürgen von Lengerken in 1935 in Berlin. After graduating from high school, he studied agriculture at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and completed his studies as a qualified farmer in 1960. After a year of practical work as a zoo technician in the Tangerhütte district in Saxony-Anhalt, he returned to the Halle Animal Breeding Institute as a research assistant.

Shaped by his teacher Prof. Wussow, the first years of his scientific activity were dedicated to horse breeding . He obtained his doctorate in 1966 with a dissertation on the subject of investigations into the influence of the special stallions used to refine German warmblood stallions .

After passing the state animal breeding director examination in 1968, he supervised the breeding of the Hanoverian horse scientifically in the Radegast experimental estate, which later became the main stud of the Central Office for Animal Breeding. In connection with the university reform in 1969, the animal science resources of the University of Halle-Wittenberg were transferred to the Animal Production and Veterinary Medicine section of the then Karl Marx University of Leipzig .

Gerhard von Lengerken began his work there as an assistant in the pig breeding science department. Here he also obtained his doctorate in 1977. sc. (Doctorate B) - this title was awarded in connection with the Facultas Docendi acquired in 1979 after the reunification in Dr. agr. habil. with the award of venia legendi for the subject animal breeding converted - with the topic: suitability of biochemical parameters and selected regulatory systems for the early detection of meat quality defects in pigs . In 1982 he was appointed lecturer in the field of raw materials science (animal products) at the Agricultural Faculty of Leipzig University.

In 1989 he was appointed professor for animal breeding at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , and a year later he was appointed to the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg for the field of animal breeding and product science. When he was appointed director of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Husbandry with Animal Clinic in 1991, he designed its rebuilding and the establishment of the Merbitz Farm Animal Science Center . The research content of the Halle institute from the development of ecological and animal species-appropriate husbandry and sustainable animal breeding as well as the application of modern biochemical-physiological and molecular genetic investigation and analysis methods were redefined during his time as director. He also influenced the re-profiling of the Faculty of Agriculture, where he was dean from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000 he held the position of Vice-Rector for Structural Development and Finance at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and retired with the end of the winter semester 2000/2001.

In 2004, as a “retiree”, he took over the editing of the specialist journal “Züchtungskunde” of the German Society for Zuchtungskunde and carried it out until 2015.

Research engagements

The main subjects of his research were:

  • Development of methods and procedures to reduce sensitivity to stress and improve meat quality in pigs
  • Methodological bases and procedures for improving carcass quality
  • Interrelationships between growth and carcass quality in farm animals
  • Performance testing and breeding value assessment in pigs including stress problems and meat quality

He supervised numerous diploma students, 20 doctoral students and 4 post-doctoral students. His numerous lectures for the scientific community and practitioners as well as 493 publications, 153 of which are first author, are documented. Particularly noteworthy are 24 monographs or book titles in which he played a key role, such as B. the two-volume book Quality of Meat and Meat Products .
