Merbitz is a district of the locality Nauendorf in the city of Wettin-Löbejün in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . It has about 600 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Merbitz is located about 15 km north of Halle (Saale) west of the Petersberg . The Götsche , a right tributary of the Saale, has its source near Kleinmerbitz .

history

Merbitz (then Merwitz) was first mentioned as the parish of Niendorp (Nauendorf) in 1264 in connection with the von Merwitz / Merbitz family. Settlement was significantly favored by Gut and the Götsche spring. After the von Merwitz family died out in the 15th century, the Archbishop of Magdeburg enfeoffed the von Schlegel family, who were wealthy in the area. In 1594 the property was bought by Vollrat von Krosigk (1543–1597). What he took over on the house, yard or permanent buildings is unknown. What can be considered certain is that the current church tower had long existed as a defensive tower at that time and that a small part of the current house and a nave were attached to it. There are no more precise documents about the construction of the house. Apparently, a house was added to the fortified tower on already existing foundations, by Matthias von Krosigk (1616–1697) and his son Anton-Ludolf (1667–1737). The different architectural styles show that there must have been a whole series of construction phases. The estate has always dominated the village and was the largest employer for the village population until 1992. In the meantime it has been bought back and renovated by the von Krosigk family .

Through the incorporation of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg to Prussia Merbitz belonged starting from 1680 to Saalkreis of Prussian Brandenburg- Duchy of Magdeburg . Around 1750, the huts of seven cottagers stood on the formerly deserted village of Geest (also called Geistanger), today's Kleinmerbitz. With the Treaty of Tilsit , Merbitz and Geest (Kleinmerbitz) were incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. They belonged to the canton of Löbejün . After Napoleon's defeat and the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Napoleon's allied opponents liberated the Saalkreis in early October 1813. During the political reorganization after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Merbitz and Kleinmerbitz were attached to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony in 1816 and assigned to the Saalkreis.

On July 1, 1950, the community of Merbitz was incorporated into Nauendorf . Since January 1, 2011, Merbitz and Kleinmerbitz have belonged to the newly formed town of Wettin-Löbejün.
