Gerlach (Czech Jarloch ; born November 1, 1165 in the Rhineland ; † 1228 in Milevsko ) was the first abbot of the Mühlhausen monastery in Bohemia . He also worked as a chronicler .

Life

Gerlach was sent to school in Würzburg at the age of nine. From there, he was probably in 1177 from Seelauer abbot Gottschalk in the monastery Seelau taken where it the Order of Norbertine joined. On February 25, 1184 he was ordained a deacon and in 1186 a priest by Bishop Heinrich of Prague . In 1187 he appointed him the first abbot of the Mühlhausen ( Milevsko ) monastery, which had been under construction since 1184 . In 1197 Gerlach led the monastery founder Georg von Mühlhausen ( Jiři z Milevska ) to Prague. Until 1221 it is proven several times in documents.

In addition to his services to the Mühlhausen monastery, Gerlach also gained importance as a chronicler. First, he had the notes of the historian Vincenz of Prague († 1167), who was the chaplain of Bishop Daniel of Prague , copied and added a few comments. He continued the subsequent records from 1167 himself. In his chronicle he also included Ansbert's report on the crusade of Emperor Frederick , which has not been preserved in other sources.

Gerlach's surviving chronicle, which is in the archive of the Strahov Monastery , ends with the year 1198. The sequel has probably been lost. According to the Bohemian chronicler Václav Hájek z Libočan , Abbot Gerlach died in 1228.
