Gerlach Cornelis Johannes van Massow , also Gerlach Cornelius Johannes van Massow , (born October 6, 1794 in Rembang , † March 26, 1852 in Leyden ) was a Dutch lawyer and councilor.

Family coat of arms from 1844, with the seven-pointed baron's crown

He belonged to the Dutch branch of the Pomeranian noble family von Massow . His father Godefridus van Massow (* 1761; † 1818), merchant and councilor of the city of Leyden, had the family accepted into the Dutch nobility in 1817 as "van Massow" . The admission took place in the untitled nobility with the predicate Jonkheer .

Gerlach Cornelis Johannes van Massow was born in Rembang on Java , where his father worked for the Dutch East India Company . From 1811 he studied law at the University of Leyden and was a student of Nicolaas Smallenburg . In 1815 he took part in the fight against Napoleon with the student hunter corps . In 1817 an award-winning legal treatise was printed by him at state expense, and in 1818 he received his doctorate.

Massow settled on the advice of his uncle Daniël François van Alphen , then a member of the Second Chamber of the States General, in 1821 as a lawyer at the Hoog Gerechtshof in The Hague . However, he devoted himself only little to the legal work, but frequented the court and went on trips to France, England and Germany. In Berlin he renewed relations with the German Massows.

From 1841 he was a member of the college of the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland , a Dutch waterschap based in Leyden . From 1845 to 1848 he was also a member of the Leyden City Council.

In 1845 he became a member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde , the society for Dutch literature.

Massow was given the title of baron in 1844 . In contrast, his younger brother Frederik van Massow (* 1798, † 1876) had claimed the title of baron because he belonged to the von Massow family , which was unsuccessful and therefore had himself deleted from the Dutch nobility in 1837.
