Gernot Born

Gernot Born (born May 17, 1944 in Dillenburg ; † February 9, 2012 ) was a German physicist .

Gernot Born came from Hessen . After studying physics , mathematics and chemistry from 1963 to 1968 at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , he obtained his physics diploma and doctorate in solid state physics . He then became a lecturer at his alma mater and in 1973 a professor . Two years later he moved to the University of Duisburg , where he took over a professorship for physics and physics didactics . Over time he became Dean of the Department of Physics and Technology and Vice Rector for Research and Young Scientists. In 1986 he took over the post of rector of the university, which he held until 1995. In addition, he was chairman of the state rectors' conference from 1992 to 1994. Afterwards Born worked as a physics lecturer in Duisburg until his retirement in 2009 .

In 1999 Gernot Born made a brief detour into politics. In the mayoral election in Duisburg, he ran as a non-party candidate with the support of the CDU against the SPD office holder Bärbel Zieling . However, he was clearly defeated with 35 to 53 percent of the vote.
