Gernot Facius (born December 6, 1942 in Karlsbad ) is a German newspaper journalist .

Journalistic career

As the youngest volunteer in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time, Gernot Facius began his journalistic career at the age of 18 at the Franconian Volksblatt in Würzburg . In 1971 he was one of the co-founders of the Deutscher Depeschendienst (ddp) news agency . Since 1976 he was part of the editorial team of the daily newspaper Die Welt and was responsible for “Religion and Society” for a long time, later also for the opinion department. Twice, most recently from 1996 to 2000, he was deputy editor-in-chief of his newspaper in Berlin. Facius has been a member of the Society of Catholic Publicists in Germany (GKP) and a member of the CDU since 1988 .

As an author, he wrote regularly - often under the abbreviation fac - until the end of 2013, articles on church topics for Die Welt . Facius is considered an excellent expert on the church scene in Germany. In the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit he published an article for the first time in October 2007 about the Berlin Center against Expulsions and since the end of 2010 he has been writing articles on topics related to expellees policy and, to a lesser extent, on church topics. As early as 2006 he signed the “Appeal for Freedom of the Press” staged by the newspaper against the exclusion of Junge Freiheit from the Leipzig Book Fair .
