Geropogon hybridus is the only plant species of the genus Geropogon within the sunflower family (Asteraceae). In German he is also called the hybrid goat beard .
description
Vegetative characteristics
Geropogon hybridus is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 80 centimeters. The leaves are 60 to 80 millimeters long and about 3 millimeters wide.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from April to July. The flower heads are 30 to 50 millimeters in diameter and have few flowers. The approximately 8 bracts are twice to three times as long as the envelope. The pink to lilac ray florets are shorter than the shell.
The achenes are beaked, the marginal ones with five coarse bristles of unequal length, the others with feathery hair. The beak is shorter than the fruit.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12 or 14.

Occurrence
Geropogon hybridus is native to the Mediterranean area. In the Canary Islands, Madeira and Porto Santo and in the Crimea, their originality is questionable. Geropogon hybridus grows in olive groves, pastures, fallow land and ruderal sites. On Crete it lives at altitudes from sea level to 850 meters.
Taxonomy
The genus Geropogon was established by Carl von Linné in 1763 . The type species is Geropogon glaber L. The lectotype was established in 1988 (LINN-945.1) by C. Díaz de la Guardia and G. Blanca in El género Geropogon L. (Compositae, Lactuceae). in Lazaroa , Volume 9, 1988, p. 38.
Synonyms for Geropogon hybridus (L.) Sch. Gdp. are Geropogon glaber L. , Geropogon hirsutus L. , Tragopogon hybridus L. , Tragopogon geropogon Rouy nom. illeg., Tragopogon glaber (L.) Hill , Tragopogon hirsutus (L.) Hill .
