Gérard "Gerry" Weiner , PC (born June 26, 1933 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons between 1984 and 1993 and was temporarily a minister.

Life

Gérard "Gerry" Weiner, who worked as a pharmacist, began his political career in local politics and was initially a member of the city council of Dollard-Des Ormeaux between 1978 and 1982 and then from 1982 to 1984 mayor of this city in the province of Québec.

In the House of Commons election on September 4, 1984 , he was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Commons in the Dollard constituency with 26,076 votes . In the 24th cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney , Merrithew took over numerous government offices. He was Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between November 1, 1984 and November 24, 1985, and then Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Employment and Immigration from November 25, 1985 to June 29, 1986. He then served as Minister of State for Immigration in the Ministry of Employment and Immigration between June 30, 1986 and March 30, 1988, and as Minister of State for Multiculturalism with the Secretary of State for Canada from March 31 to September 14, 1988 Was Minister of State for Multiculturalism and Citizenship with the Secretary of State for Canada on September 20, 1988 and April 20, 1991.

In the general election on November 21, 1988 , he was re-elected a member of the lower house with 27,532 votes in the constituency of Pierrefonds-Dollard . He was Secretary of State for Canada from January 30, 1989 to April 20, 1991, and Minister of Multiculturalism and Citizenship in the 24th Cabinet from April 21, 1991 to June 24, 1993. As a minister, he also became a member of the Canadian Privy Council . He continued to serve as Minister for Multiculturalism and Citizenship in Prime Minister Kim Campbell's 25th Cabinet from June 25 to November 3, 1993 .

In the general election on October 25, 1993 , Gerry Weiner ran again for a seat in the lower house in the constituency of Pierrefonds-Dollard . However, he received only 8,106 votes and thus missed the re-entry into parliament.
