Gert Schilling

Gert Schilling (* 1945 in Bad Frankenhausen ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1990 to 2000 he was mayor of the Berlin district of Weißensee .

Life

Schilling passed his Abitur in 1963 and studied electrical engineering and electronics in Magdeburg and at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he graduated as a graduate engineer. From 1967 to 1990 he worked as a development engineer. The Protestant Christian found political work through the church in 1987 and joined the New Forum shortly after the founding appeal . In November 1989 he switched to what was then the SDP and was an active participant in the district's round table until the local elections in 1990 .

On May 31, 1990, at the suggestion of the SPD, he was elected as the first freely elected mayor after the fall of the Berlin Wall (successor to the incumbent mayor Dietmar Tuschy ). He held this office until the district was dissolved in December 2000. On January 1, 2001, the Weißensee district was merged with the Prenzlauer Berg district and the old Pankow district to form the new Pankow district.

Since the "Albert Schweitzer Foundation for Elderly People in Need of Care" was established in 1997, he has been chairman of the foundation's board.
