Gert Schmittinger (born December 16, 1933 ) is a former German soccer player. He played between 1958 and 1962 for SC Chemie Halle in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football . There he was called up in 40 point games and scored 12 goals.

Athletic career

For the 1954/55 season, a soccer section was founded at SC DHfK Leipzig with the aim of developing a squad forge for the GDR national team. Talented players from all over the GDR were combined into two teams (SC DHfK I and II), and both teams were integrated into two seasons of the second-rate GDR league without any athletic qualifications . The players in both Team I and Team II called up. The selected players also included 20-year-old Gert Schmittinger. However, he received little attention from trainer Kurt Fritzsche and was only used in a point game for Team I. The SC DHfK - football project was terminated after the first half of the season due to unsuccessfulness, and the players were distributed to other football teams.

Schmittinger was delegated to the GDR league club SC Wissenschaft Halle . There he was called up for the first time in the 1956 season (changed to calendar year rhythm). He played eight of 26 league games and scored five goals. Even in 1957 he did not make it into the starting eleven because he was only used in ten point games (2 goals). During the season of 1958, SC Wissenschaft merged with SC Chemie Halle, and the science team became the 2nd team of SC Chemie. Schmittinger completed a total of 17 GDR league games for SC Wissenschaft and SC Chemie II and scored five goals. In addition, he was also used in the league team of SC Chemie Halle. Between the 18th and 24th match day (a total of 26 match days) he was called up four times as a right striker.

At the end of the 1958 season, SC Chemie Halle had been relegated. He had to spend the 1959 season in the GDR league, but managed to get promoted again immediately. Schmittinger was also significantly involved in this, as he was only missing in one of the 26 point games and was the Halle's top scorer with 15 goals. Due to several injury breaks he could only be used 18 times in the new league season in 1960, but was again the most successful shooter of his team with eleven championship goals. In 1961/62, the GDR football game was switched back to the summer-spring season, and 39 point games were played in the major league between March 1961 and June 1962. Schmittinger was again handicapped by injuries and, after completing 13 point games, was only called up sporadically in six further championship games from autumn 1961. After he was used again on the 39th matchday, Schmittinger ended his career in the GDR top division at the age of 28.

He returned to the team from Wissenschaft Halle, which had since been revived as the University Sports Association (HSG). The HSG was relegated to the fourth class district league in 1961/62 , but became third class in 1963/64 after the second GDR league was closed . 1963 Schmittinger was with the HSG Halle district champion, but the team could not prevail in the relegation games to the GDR league. After the 1963/64 season, the HSG's soccer section was transferred to the company sports association (BSG) Turbine Halle, with which Schmittinger remained active in the district league for several years. In the 1970s he volunteered as a junior coach at Halleschen FC Chemie (successor to SC Chemie).
