Gert Wessels (* 21st December 1950 in Altenoythe ) is a Major General of the Army of the Armed Forces retired. In his last employment, he was Commander in Defense Area IV from July 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012 .

Military career

Training and first uses

After graduating from high school in 1969, Wessels joined the German Army with Panzerpionierkompanie 320 in Barme . After his training as an officer and his first assignment as a train driver , he studied at the Technical University of Munich from 1973 and graduated as a qualified engineer . In 1978 he became an S3 officer in Pioneer Battalion 11 in Dörverden . Two years later, Wessels took over his 3rd company as chief . This was followed by general staff training at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg.

Service as a staff officer

Wessels had his first assignment as a staff officer in 1984 as G4 of Panzergrenadierbrigade 10 in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . He then studied at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham , Great Britain , military technology and subsequently became a consultant in the command staff of Army VII 1. His next assignment was that of the G3 staff officer of Panzerbrigade 36 in Bad Mergentheim , before becoming commander of the Panzer Engineer Battalion 12 in 1991 in Volkach . In 1993, Wessels began his service as a consultant in the Armaments Department at the Federal Ministry of Defense . A year later he moved back to the command staff of the Army, where he was Head of Division VI 5 and then II 1.

Service in the rank of general

In 2000, Wessels took over command of Logistics Brigade 2 in Germersheim , but a year later he switched to the Army Office , first as Department Head III, then I, and then returned to the Armaments Department, where he was Sub-Department Head V, his last assignment before he took over the command of the Military District Command IV.
