Gertrud Rünger

Gertrud Rünger , also Gertrude Rünger (* 1899 in Posen ; † June 11, 1965 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer (alto soprano , later also dramatic soprano ).

Life

She received her training from Hertha Dehmlow in Berlin and began as a choir singer at the Stralsund Theater in 1922 . In 1923 she moved to the Erfurt Theater , where she took on her first solo roles. From 1924 to 1926 she sang as a soloist at the Theater von Gera , from 1926 to 1928 at the Theater Magdeburg , from 1928 to 1929 at the Cologne Opera House and from 1929 to 1930 at the Nuremberg City Theater .

From 1930 to 1935 she was part of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera , where she became known in 1931 as Eboli in Don Carlos and in 1933 as Lady Macbeth in Macbeth . From 1934 to 1948 she worked at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin. From 1936 to 1937 she was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York , where she played Brünnhilde in Die Walküre and in Götterdämmerung as well as Fricka in Das Rheingold and Ortrud in Lohengrin .

She has also made guest appearances at the State Operas of Dresden, Munich, Amsterdam, Hague, the Paris Opera (1933), London ( Royal Opera House , 1934), Antwerp (1937–38) and Rome (1939, 1940). In 1931 she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in the Rosenkavalier and subsequently appeared repeatedly at the Festival in the 1930s. Since 1938 she has appeared again mainly at the Vienna State Opera.

Rünger was also a concert singer and later worked as a singing teacher in Berlin. She was particularly valued as a Wagner interpreter. Other important roles were both the title heroine and Klytämnestra in Elektra and Leonore in Fidelio .
