Career

In 1985 Gesa Lindemann completed her studies with a diploma in sociology. From 1987 to 1988 and 1990 to 1992 she was a research assistant at the Magnus Hirschfeld Society in Berlin. In 1993 she did her doctorate at the University of Bremen on the social construction of gender . From 1993 to 1994 she was a lecturer in sociology at the Free University of Berlin and from 1994 to 1999 research assistant with Heinz Steinert at the University of Frankfurt am Main . Gesa Lindemann completed her habilitation in 2001 and, after holding various teaching positions and substitute professorships as well as visiting professorships in Great Britain, Brazil and Sweden, became professor of sociology at the University of Oldenburg in 2007 .

Focus

In addition to gender research, Lindemann's work focuses on sociological theory, especially social and societal theory, sociology of human rights, methodology of social sciences, medical sociology and sociology of scientific knowledge as well as especially the relationship between sociology and anthropology and the limits of socialization .

Following on from Helmuth Plessner's historical-reflexive anthropology , she developed the concept of a reflexive anthropology . In this, anthropology or anthropological assumptions are not understood as a socio-theoretical foundation, but are made the object of observation. This approach deals with the question of how the circle of social persons is limited in societies and what function anthropology has in modern times.
