Free ... is still too expensive! is a card game by Thorsten Gimmler and was first published by Amigo in 2004 . In 2005 the game was among other things on the recommendation list for the “ Game of the Year ” and achieved second place in the “ à la carte card game award ”. In 2011 Amigo published a new edition with a revised design under the title GIFT .

Another new edition appeared in 2017 under the title Schöne Schei # !? e , again with a new graphic design. In this design, it was nominated for the Graf Ludo German Game Graphics Award in 2018 . In the English-speaking world, the game has been known as No Thanks! expelled.

Game idea and process

One after the other, cards with different values are revealed from the stack, which a player can either pick up or - against payment of a game chip - reject. All cards count at the end of the game, but players can reduce these by trying to put together rows of cards.

The game material includes:

  • 33 playing cards with values from 3 to 35 printed on them
  • 55 game chips

At the beginning of a game all playing cards are shuffled and nine of the cards are sorted out without looking, the remaining 24 cards form a face-down pile. Each player receives a supply of chips, which he keeps as secret as possible from his fellow players during the following course of the game.

The top card from the stack is revealed. When it is a player's turn, he must decide whether he wants to take the card or reject it. If he rejects it, he has to pay a chip from his supply and place it next to the card, then it is the next player's turn and has the same choice. If a player picks up the card on display, he also receives all the chips on display. If a player does not have any chips to pay for the rejection of a card, he has to pick up the card, but usually receives new chips again. If a card was picked up, a new one is revealed from the stack.

The game ends when the last card is picked up by a player. In the following evaluation, the players count their points. Each card counts minus points according to its printed value, but in the case of a series of cards only the value of the lowest card counts. Furthermore, every chip counts as a plus point. An example for the counting of points: At the end of the game a player has cards 5, 10, 11, 12 and 27. Cards 5 and 27 count as many minus points according to their value. However, 10, 11 and 12 form a row, so that only the minus points of the 10 are counted. So the player notes 5 + 10 + 27 = 42 minus points.

Awards and reviews

In 2005, the game was on the recommendation list for the “ Game of the Year ” and achieved second place in the “ à la carte card game award ”. Also in 2005 it was nominated for the “ Tric Trac d'Or ” award given by the French game magazine Tric Trac , and in the following year it was on the nomination list for the French critic's awardAs d'Or - Jeu de l'Année ”.

The reviews for free ... is still too expensive! were very positive overall. The reviewers praised it as a quickly explained, entertaining card game with a "high fun and annoyance factor". For some reviewers, however, the percentage of happiness was too high, and the “boring” or “rather functional” presentation of the cards (2004 edition) was also criticized several times.

In the design by Dennis Lohausen , Schöne Sch # !? e from 2017 was nominated for the German Graf Ludo 2018 graphics game award.

New editions

Under the title GIFT , Amigo published a new edition of the game in 2011 with a revised graphic design, and the number of players was increased from five to seven. In 2017 the graphic design was renewed again - this time the cards are illustrated with drawings by Dennis Lohausen - and this time the game was published under the title Schöne Sch # !? e . The scope of the game material and the rules of the game in both new editions are unchanged from those of the first version.
