The Lindenplatz School houses the primary part.

School history

Prehistory - former schools in Ruhland

1604 was in the inheritance book ( Urbarium ) of the Guteborn lords of Gersdorff about the rights of the owners and obligations of the citizens of Ruhland that they exercise "the right of patronage over the appointment of pastors, chaplains and other church and school employees". A schoolmaster was first mentioned in 1540: Matthias Zorner, personally instructed by Luther in the new doctrine of the faith, gave his first sermon on October 31 in the town church. Nothing has been handed down about school lessons, but school buildings (apparently near the church) were chronically mentioned on the occasion of the town fires in 1548, 1624, 1661 and 1768. In other cases (1637, 1644) it is only recorded that almost the whole city burned down with the exception of the district at the Matzmühle.

In 1744 a girls' school was set up next to the existing cantor school. In 1776, after a fire in the town, “the new school, the current cantor's council” was built on the church square. This “required a total of 836 Tlr.23Gr. 9Pfg. ". In 1840, pastor Fürbringer established the elementary school up to the 3rd grade, classrooms were in the cantor's office and in the "Spittel" (hospital). In 1843 classrooms were built in what is now the Lindenplatz School, which "had been bought for the town hall". In 1853 a middle class was founded, on which the cantor and girls' teachers worked together. In 1870 there was a boys 'class (10-14 year olds) in the cantorat under the direction of Cantor Endemann, a girls' class "in the old town hall" (in the Lindenplatzschule) under teacher Ackermann, "the beginners class was on the church square next to today's Clausnitzer inn". In 1891 the toddler school was opened with 40 children.

In addition, there was a Latin school from 1860 to 1870, founded by pastor Kadelbach. In the Kadelbach house, some students were accommodated as pensioners, and lessons were held in the house of the tax inspector Pfeifer in Gartenstrasse. A family school, later a 6-level private school, was founded in 1898.

1892 to 1954

Sibling Scholl School

The main building of the current school was inaugurated on October 3, 1893 as the "Kaiser Wilhelm School" after 2 years of construction. The first rector was Kurt Krug. In 1903 seven teachers were employed and had an exemplary collection of teaching materials. "Upper classes were added which, under their successor, Rector Rudolf Schulze, achieved a special reputation among the citizens". A middle school section was formed from these in 1939, which Rector Klemmer took over in 1945.

In 1945 the middle school was closed and a new elementary school was established. Rudolf Schulze was entrusted with the management. In 1947 the school had 14 teachers. Martin Lamm from Wittichenau took over the management briefly, Anna Schneider in 1948 and Gerhard Baston in 1949.

On January 1, 1949, the newly appointed headmaster Gerhard Baston announced the first official act to merge the previously separate boys and girls classes. On September 5, 1949, the school was named " Geschwister-Scholl-Schule ". The students had already researched the history of the namesake and applied to the city council to rename the city park to Geschwister-Scholl-Weg. The “Young Pioneers' application” was granted in the council meeting on May 24, 1949.

1955 to 2004

In 1955 the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule Ruhland became the central school and took over the 5th – 8th from September 1st, 1955. Classes at the Hermsdorf primary school. This was also made possible by the bus lines operated by VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheide . For this purpose, the Lindenplatzschule, which had been used by the vocational school until then, was taken over, for which the vocational school was awarded the Volkshaus (now Schützenhaus). From September 1, 1956, the school was declared a middle school. The students came from 17 localities in the area (according to Amt Ortrand and Amt Ruhland ). Classrooms were set up in the Lindenplatz School for the 9th and 10th grades. The Hermsdorf / Lipsa school was completely closed due to a lack of teachers and classes 1–4 in Ruhland started school. The transport of Arnsdorf, Hermsdorfer and Lipsaer pupils was carried out by Kraftverkehr Lauchhammer. In 1959/60 a new school kitchen was built on Lindenplatz. In 1961/62 the gym across from the sports field and next to the main building the school building with rooms for 4 classes are built and put into use. In 1963, a teaching pool was added to the gym with lottery funds and savings in other buildings.

Josef Slansky was director from August 1958 to August 1967, then Gerhard Baston again. In 1965 the school became a 10-class polytechnic high school. In 1967, the school chronicle noted the headmaster of the Arnsdorf primary school (with 4 school classes) in a list of employees. Since when the Arnsdorf primary school has been part of it (whether since 1955?) Cannot be deduced from the records.

From October 3 to 13, 1968 the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the school took place, including exhibitions and culturally designed parents' evenings by school groups, a swimming comparison and a sports festival with schools in neighboring towns. Four former students from 1893 were also invited.

The biology teacher Horst Bormann achieved with great commitment, including students in school lessons and in their free time, a design of the school garden with flower beds and special facilities and facilities, which was considered exemplary and exemplary (1955 consultation garden and then model school garden in the Senftenberg district, a prime example in the Cottbus district) and became known throughout the GDR through a television documentary. From 1966 to 1978, students also looked after the facilities on Geschwister-Scholl-Weg under his direction .

On May 19 and 20, 1973, the school's pioneer marching band became district champion for the second time. It is also mentioned that the marching band took part in the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin . From September 1, 1973, the Arnsdorf secondary school was fully integrated and no longer has its own director, the 3 classes are considered to be outsourced classes of the secondary school. In 1976 there were structural improvements in the Ruhland and Arnsdorf school buildings, and a new school garden was laid out in Arnsdorf. The after-school care center was also in the Lindenplatz School, but there was no playground there.

In February 1983 the school commemorated the Scholl siblings on the 40th anniversary of their death. There was a ceremony, the 6th to 9th grades attended the film "The White Rose".

From 8th to 15th In October 1983 the school celebrated its 90th anniversary with several events. In the 1983/84 school year, the tradition and reflection on the namesake of the school were intensified, class 8a (class leader Hans Dietzel) fulfilled their research assignment particularly well. A Geschwister-Scholl memorial was built by the students with the support of some parents.

Since 1984 there has been a Geschwister-Scholl-memorial run every year, which the school organized with the involvement of the Geschwister-Scholl-Weg. In 1985 a friendship agreement was signed with the school in Złotoryja . For the first time in 1986 a delegation of athletes from the Polish school took part in the Geschwister Scholl memorial run. Unfortunately, this relationship ended with the political change in the GDR .

On October 3, 1990, the " standard hornbeam " was planted in front of the school - dug up on Geschwister-Scholl-Weg. The school director Gisbert Büttner, the park active chairman Wilhelm Zimmerling and the biology teacher Erika Zänsler (also a member of the park active) were involved. The tree can also be found on the school logo.

In 1991 the school became a comprehensive school with primary level. In March 1993 the after-school care center moved into its new domicile in Hartwigstrasse, after which the Lindenplatzschule was reconstructed, partly rebuilt and put into use on September 27th.

Since 1997 there has been a school partnership with the Collége "Saint Augustin" in Riaillé in France.

Since 2005

In 2005 the comprehensive school became a high school.

Geschwister-Scholl memorial, street view

In 2016 the Geschwister-Scholl memorial was redesigned and inaugurated on October 14th. Already at the inauguration, the idea of an art project "Tolerance and Acceptance - Tearing the Cloak of Indifference" arose, which was implemented in the 2017 school year. A piece of the wall on Dresdener Strasse advertises tolerance in many languages. This project bridges the gap from the resistance struggle of the Scholl siblings to the present, in which more tolerance and acceptance are still or again needed in society.

On July 4, 2017, 30 selected students drove to the state chancellery in Potsdam for the award ceremony of the Scholl-Oberschule with the title “School with excellent professional and academic orientation”. There they performed two pieces of music that they had learned in the Cajón project.

Architecture and buildings

The listed main building is 2-storey, 13-axis with a gable roof. It is a typical school building architecture of the German Empire, exposed brick construction with yellow and brown clinker bricks to structure the view. The school extension building was originally one-story with a flat monopitch roof. During the last renovation, it was given an additional mezzanine with the auditorium and also a gable roof. The entrance area is designed as a short dwelling with a cross roof, the windows of the auditorium as horizontal dormers.

The Lindenplatz School is 2-storey and was originally 7-axis with a hipped roof. Thanks to a two-storey extension with a hipped roof, the floor plan is now L-shaped.

The teaching pool could not be maintained for cost reasons and is now part of the gym in Ortrander Straße. The sports field opposite is also used by the school. The assembly hall and gymnasium are also used by clubs and can be used privately.

Educational work, offers and equipment

The following qualifications are attainable in the lower secondary level: Vocational qualification, advanced vocational qualification (secondary school qualification), technical high school qualification (secondary school qualification), technical high school qualification with entitlement to attend upper secondary school. English is taught in foreign languages, plus French and Russian. Courses geared towards education are set up in certain subjects .

From grade 7 (compulsory elective I) the following are offered: 2nd foreign language French, natural sciences, industrial studies (WAT). The school was already a “ strong school ” in 2011, and before and after that it regularly participated in the national competition.

The projects that are evaluated on project days or in a project week play a major role. History projects led to a Geschwister-Scholl memorial stone and in 2016 to a memorial in the schoolyard. In 2017, the Cajón project led to the award of the Scholl secondary school with the title “School with excellent professional and study orientation”. The new oven at the estate, an idea of Mayor Uwe Kminikowski, also turned into a project: a group of schoolchildren cleaned the stones, laid the foundation on June 21, 2017, then built the base and completed the oven on June 30, 2017.

There are the following all-day offers: reading kids, chess for beginners, remedial German lessons, remedial mathematics, remedial English, homepage / computer, handicraft, fishery, nature and the environment, woodworking, press / school house design, Lego League, environmental chemistry, dance, homework supervision, school newspaper.
